California Man Killed in Pedestrian Accident

A pedestrian accident, early Sunday morning, claimed the life of a 31-year-old man as he walked in front of a vehicle that was heading eastbound on State Road 198, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The man, of Lemoore, was struck by a 2000 Isuzu Rodeo, according to reports by CHP. The woman driving the SUV was traveling at approximately 70 mph. She applied her brakes to avoid hitting the pedestrian, but was unsuccessful in doing so.

State Road 198 heading eastbound was closed for approximately two hours while officers investigated the accident.

Two Killed In Pedestrian-Train Accidents within Hours

Two pedestrians were killed within a nine-hour span of one another, Thursday, in two separate railroad accidents in the Bay Area.

Union Pacific officials report a Newark woman was killed after being struck by a freight train at 3:04 a.m. while walking across the train tracks on Cedar Blvd. The accident is currently under investigation.

Barely eight hours after the first accident authorities across the San Francisco Bay in San Mateo, reported an unidentified pedestrian was killed after being struck by a Caltrain commuter train.

The train was traveling north when it struck the pedestrian at the 9th Avenue at 11:40 a.m., according to a Caltrain spokesman. The pedestrian-train accident is being investigated by Transit Police and San Mateo Police.

In 2006, California had the second highest number of deaths at train crossings with 36 fatalities, according to Operation Livesaver. Texas had the most deaths, 42.

Pedestrian Struck by San Francisco Municipal Railway Bus

A 40-year-old woman is in the hospital following a pedestrian accident this morning, when she was struck by a San Francisco Municipal Railway bus at 7:15 a.m., according to police.

The accident happened at 22nd Avenue and California Street, California Highway Patrol said.

Police report the woman was transported to San Francisco General Hospital. Her current condition and the extent of injuries she suffered in the accident, were not immediately known.

Officials are currently investigating the cause of the accident. A spokesperson for the San Francisco Municipal Railway could not be reached for comment.

Pedestrian Killed by Bus

A bus struck and killed an Oxnard man in his 40's this morning in a pedestrian accident on Highway 101 in Ventura, authorities said.

Witnesses told the California Highway Patrol that the man had walked onto the highway and right into the path of the bus, a Ventura Police Sergeant said.

The accident occurred just south of Telephone Road at approximately 9:46 a.m. Authorities did not release the victims name pending family notification.

California Highway Patrol handed the case over to Ventura police who are still investigating whether this was an accident or if the man had intended to commit suicide.

Driver Hits Pedestrian, Killing Him

While in the parking lot of a medical clinic this morning, a 92-year-old driver hit the gas instead of the brake, causing his vehicle to crash into a wall, a curb, two parked cars and a 62-year-old pedestrian, killing him, authorities said.

The series of crashes leading up to the pedestrian accident started at approximately 8:50 a.m. on Friday, beside a Kaiser Permanete Clinic located on Avocado Boulevard in Rancho San Diego, said an officer with the California Highway Patrol.

The man was pronounced dead shortly after the accident occurred at 10 a.m., authorities said. Authorities have not identified the driver and the accident is still pending investigation.

Woman,80, Killed by Two Cars

An 80-year-old woman lost her life in a pedestrian accident on Friday, at 8:15 p.m., after she was stuck by two cars, authorities said.

The woman was struck by a northbound vehicle as she was crossing the street near the intersection of Brookhurst and Meridith Drive, said Hunting Beach Police.

The impact caused the pedestrian to fall to the ground where she was then struck by another vehicle. Upon exiting the vehicle, the second driver had realized she hit the woman and she called the police.

The first driver to hit the woman fled the scene but later returned and spoke with police. No charges have been filed and alcohol is not suspected. The accident is still under investigation.

Pedestrian Killed by Pregnant Drunk Driver

A woman lost her life in a pedestrian accident on Highway 9, Monday, when an intoxicated pregnant woman drove off the side of the rode, striking her with her vehicle, reports California Highway Patrol.

California Highway Patrol was trying to piece together the chain of events that led up to the fatal accident.

Fire Rescue was first on the scene where they discovered the driver had run her pickup off the road, into an embankment. The woman was acting unruly and appeared to be intoxicated. CHP transported the pregnant woman to the hospital, as they were unsure if she was having contractions.

The officers believed the accident only involved the pregnant woman and her vehicle. Shortly later a person walked into the police station to inform authorities that someone had been hit by the car.

Rescue returned to the accident scene to find the woman lying about a quarter mile from the accident scene. She was pronounced dead at the scene. The accident is still under investigation.

Woman Killed in Hit-and-Run Accident

A 25-year-old man has been arrested after a hit-and-run pedestrian accident. The driver was allegedly driving while under the influence and then fleeing the scene of the accident, according to California Highway Patrol.

The driver, whose license is issued from Colorado, faces charges that include gross vehicular manslaughter and felony DUI, according to a California Highway Patrol spokeswoman.

The victim of the hit-and-run pedestrian accident was a 33-year-old woman. She was killed when struck by the drivers Acura Integra. The driver was on the 4200 block of Wembereley Drive when his vehicl hit a woman that was taking her baby out of the car, hit four other vehicles and finally striking the woman.

The woman that was taking her baby from the car was taken to UC Davic Medical center where she was treated for a broken ankle. Her baby was not injured in the accident. The other woman was knocked onto the hood of a car and into a windshield. The driver was not injured in the crash.

Pedestrian Hit by Train

Train Strikes Pedestrian.

On Saturday evening at approximately 6:06pm, a pedestrian was injured when a train derailed and hit the person on Old Santa Cruz Highway, reports a California Highway Patrol Officer.

The location of the pedestrian accident was reported as being 22412 Old Santa Cruz Highway at the intersection with Summit Rd.

At this time, no further details have been released and the accident is still being investigated by the California Highway Patrol.

Jury Awards $10.3 million In Pedestrian Death Case

L.A. Unified School District held responsible.

The family of a six year old girl who was struck and killed by a van in her school's parking lot two years ago was awarded $10.3 million by a Los Angeles jury, according to an Associated Press news report. The jury concluded that the Los Angeles Unified School District was primarily responsible for the accident.

The wrongful death lawsuit filed by Jordan Sandel's family against the school district alleged that the parking lot at Lanai Road Elementary School in the San Fernando Valley was not designed according to state-approved blueprints, the article stated. During the trial the jury heard evidence that district officials had been made aware of possibly hazardous conditions in the parking lot before the Jan. 13, 2005 fatal accident.

Michael Sandel, Jordan's father, called the verdict an "incredible victory," and said he planned to use the money to open a foundation to address safety issues in schools nationwide, the news report said.

Sandels further says in the article:

"The trial was the closing of that part of our life. Now starts the part of our life which is dedicated to doing things in her name."

Jurors also found the school district 80 percent at fault for the accident and the van's driver, Lauri Dowling, 20 percent responsible. According to court documents, Dowling, a parent, was backing the van out of a handicapped parking spot when she lost control of the vehicle and it reversed. She had lost control of her legs because of a debilitating illness. The plaintiff's attorney argued that the parking space should have been positioned away from the sidewalk as shown on the school's original blueprints. Instead, he said, the parking space was positioned in such a way that Dowling had to reverse toward the sidewalk where the little girl was walking with her father.

The school district's attorney is saying that this is the largest judgment ever that has been awarded against them. The district, of course, plans to appeal the decision.

This is obviously a tragic case. What is worse that the school's principal herself said in a deposition that parents complained to her weekly about how chaotic and dangerous the parking lot was and that she had alerted the district numerous times about it.

But as it turned out, the district did nothing about it!

This is scandalous. Not only has a little girl lost her life, but millions in taxpayer dollars have been waisted. It is money that family rightfully deserves. It won't bring back their child, but as the father said, will help keep her memory alive and hopefully, prevent such tragedies from happening in the future.

Will the negligent L.A. Unified School District employees be held accountable by the District? Will they have to pay any of the verdict themselves, personally? Will this loss of millions siimply be passed on to the tax payers, stripped out of the services for the District's students or taken out of teacher salaries? It has to come from some place.
