An Ohio pastor has been charged for allegedly having inappropriate sexual contact with a 15-year-old girl, according to a news article posted in the Dayton Journal News in Ohio.

The girl, whose name was not released because she was a minor and the victim of a sex crime, said Enorris Thomas, an assistant pastor at Second Baptist Church on Verity Parkway, fondled her at his Middletown home, according to Detective Fred Shuemake. The girl made the clergy abuse allegation against Thomas during a separate custody hearing, the article said

Thomas was charged with sexual imposition, a third-degree misdemeanor, and was taken to the Middletown City Jail on Feb. 14, Shuemake said. He was released the same day on his own recognizance, according to jail records.

Thomas declined to comment on the issue. The Rev. Nathaniel L. Cooper, pastor of the Second Baptist Church, also could not be reached for comment.

This is a sad story and one that happens all too often in this country. This girl was clearly going through problems at home. She was a young girl going through the travails of her teen years, coupled with her parents likely splitting up, because according to this report, she first talked about the pastor during a custody hearing.

Families look to men of the cloth for spiritual, emotional and familial guidance, not to be preyed upon by sexual predators. I don't know the facts of this case, but at Bisnar|Chase we are seeing more and more cases where priests, pastors, ministers, rabbis and so on, who are trusted by their congregants, abuse that trust in the worst possible manner, sexual abuse or sexual impropriety with children.

But this is a problem that we have to face because it happens almost on a daily basis in some church, temple or synagogue throughout our country. And the victims of such abuse are scared for life. They go through all sorts of psychological problems ranging from identity crisis, guilt, low self-esteem, low self worth, relationship issues, drugs, crime and worst of all, becoming abusers themselves. The perpetrators, abusers, their accomplices and those who have turned a blind eye to the sexual abuse of children and young adults, all need to be held accountable both criminally and financially.

MIDDLETOWN -- A Middletown minister charged with inappropriate sexual contact with a 15-year-old girl was found not guilty after a bench trial Thursday in Middletown Municipal Court.

The Rev. Enorris Thomas Sr. said after Judge Mark Wall's decision, "if you haven't been crucified, just keep on living. The ones that you do the most for treat you the worst."

The teen is not being identified because she is a juvenile. She made the accusation earlier this year during a custody hearing in Hamilton County.

Thomas, 68, became acting pastor of the Second Baptist Church on

Verity Parkway on June 1 and is a former member of the Citizens Advisory Board to the Middletown Division of Police. He was charged Feb. 14 with sexual imposition, a third-degree misdemeanor. He remained free on his own recognizance since that time.

About two dozen people attended the nearly two-hour trial in support of Thomas and applauded once Wall rendered his decision.

The teen and her sister started crying and screaming "it's not fair" in the courtroom and had to be restrained by family members.

Police officers stood between both families to prevent any possible altercations following the girls' emotional outbursts. The teens were led out of the courtroom through a different door into a nearby office until Thomas' supporters left the building.

The teen testified Thomas had inappropriately touched and kissed her in his home between 10 p.m. and 1 a.m. on a night in late winter 2006. The teens were staying at Thomas' home because his wife and the teen's mother went to an Indiana gambling boat.

Thomas, who took the stand in his own defense, said he did not learn of the allegations until January 2007,

and that he could not remember that particular evening. He also denied kissing or touching the teen as alleged. His wife, Martha, said her husband is in bed by 10 p.m. and has never been up when she has returned from a late night trip to a gambling boat.

After the trial, Ezra Thomas, one of Thomas' sons, said he wants to challenge lawmakers to make a law to enable those who falsely accuse someone or lie under oath to be criminally charged.

"This was a child who abused the system," he said. "There's no punishment for kids to lie like that ... No one should be able to walk away if they lie under oath or ruin a reputation."
