More Lead-Contaminated Toy Recalls Expected

In coming weeks, there will be more toys recalled for lead-contaminated paint, according to a source with knowledge of future announcements, according to CNN.

The House Subcommittee on Commerce, Trade and Consumer Protection has posted letters from retailers on its Web site that include toys the companies found to contain a hazardous amount of lead that have not yet been recalled and may be on store shelves.

Target divulged to the committee that on August 30, they had recalled 1,854 Sunny Patch Safari Children's Chair toys after the company discovered the paint on the toys contained over 30 times the amount of lead allowed by law. However, neither Targets web site nor the Consumer Product Safety Commissions contain the recall information to inform consumers.

The subcommittee has requested information from 19 toy companies that had previously distributed toys with excessive levels of lead - including Target, Dollar General and Mattel - prior to a two-day hearing on protecting children and toy safety that started on Wednesday with testimony of the CPSCS acting chairman, Mattel's CEO and CPSC Commissioner.

Mattel divulged to congressional investigators that several of the 1.5 million recalled toys for lead hazards contained almost 200 times the legal amount of lead, according to CNN.

The company said typically, the recalled toys contained 15 times more lead-contaminated paint then allowed by U.S. safety standards, set by the CPSC in 1978.
