New Era Canning Company Recalls Green Beans and Garbanzo Beans

New Era Canning Company, in conjunction with the FDA, is recalling all cans of green beans and garbanzo beans in #10 cans because they may be contaminated by Clostridium botulinum bacterium spores. The codes on the recalled products start with "00249," or the letters "GREEN" or "GARB". The recall doesn't include Italian Green Beans.

Clostridium botulinum bacterium spores have the potential for growth that produces a toxin that causes a potentially fatal form of food poisoning - botulism. Symptoms of botulism poisoning in humans can begin from 6 hours to 2 weeks after eating food that contains the toxin. Symptoms may include double vision, blurred vision, drooping eyelids, slurred speech, difficulty swallowing, and muscle weakness that moves progressively down the body, affecting the shoulders first, then descending to the upper arms, lower arms, thighs, and calves. Botulism poisoning also can cause paralysis of the breathing muscles, which can result in death.

The problem with the product was found during an FDA inspection. None of the products tested positive for the toxin and no one has reported any illness. This recall only affects the products in the large #10 cans. The code on the cans are embossed or printed in ink on the metal can ends.

Consumers should avoid all contact with the with the recalled product. Ingesting even the smallest amount of contaminated food can cause serious illness. If consumers handle the food they should was their hands immediately. When throwing the food away, double bag the cans and place in a non-recycle trash receptacle.

To see a list of the recalled product labels visit this website.

For more information on this subject, please refer to our section on Defective and Dangerous Products.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Jenny Albano

Graco & Simplicity Cribs Recalled After Three Infant Deaths

Simplicity Inc. has voluntarily recalled 1 million cribs after reports of three infant deaths, due to the drop-side detaching from the crib which can create a dangerous gap, causing a suffocation hazard.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) says they are aware of two deaths that occurred in Simplicity manufactured cribs which include a nine-month-old and six-month-old child, where the drop-side of the crib was installed upside down.

CPSC is also looking into the death of a one-year-old child in a Simplicity crib that also had the drop-side of the crib installed upside down. To date, CPSC is aware of seven infant entrapments and 55 incidents involving the recalled cribs.

CPSC is advising all parents to check the Simplicity crib to make sure the drop-side is installed properly.

Check to see that the slightly rounded rail with the decorative groove is installed at the top and the plain rail is on the bottom. Next, consumers should make sure the drop-side is securely attached to the tracks in all four corners.

CPSC said it is also aware of two incidents that occurred when the drop-side was correctly installed with older style hardware, though the upside down installation greatly increases the risk of failure.

For more information on this subject matter, please refer to the section on Defective and Dangerous Products.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Chrissie Cole

More Lead-Contaminated Toy Recalls Expected

In coming weeks, there will be more toys recalled for lead-contaminated paint, according to a source with knowledge of future announcements, according to CNN.

The House Subcommittee on Commerce, Trade and Consumer Protection has posted letters from retailers on its Web site that include toys the companies found to contain a hazardous amount of lead that have not yet been recalled and may be on store shelves.

Target divulged to the committee that on August 30, they had recalled 1,854 Sunny Patch Safari Children's Chair toys after the company discovered the paint on the toys contained over 30 times the amount of lead allowed by law. However, neither Targets web site nor the Consumer Product Safety Commissions contain the recall information to inform consumers.

The subcommittee has requested information from 19 toy companies that had previously distributed toys with excessive levels of lead - including Target, Dollar General and Mattel - prior to a two-day hearing on protecting children and toy safety that started on Wednesday with testimony of the CPSCS acting chairman, Mattel's CEO and CPSC Commissioner.

Mattel divulged to congressional investigators that several of the 1.5 million recalled toys for lead hazards contained almost 200 times the legal amount of lead, according to CNN.

The company said typically, the recalled toys contained 15 times more lead-contaminated paint then allowed by U.S. safety standards, set by the CPSC in 1978.

For more information on this topic, please visit our section on Defective and Dangerous Products.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Chrissie Cole
