The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commision (CPSC) announced on Wednesday, Fisher-Price, a division of Mattel Inc. is recalling approximately 967,000 preschool toys due to their surface paint containing excessive amounts of lead.

The toys were made by a Chinese vendor and sold in the U.S. using a non-approved paint pigment that contains lead. Eighty-three types of toys such as Big Bird, Elmo and the Cookie Monster are included in the nationwide recall.

Consumers can exchange any recalled toys for a voucher for another product of the same value. This is the first Fisher-Price recall involving lead paint.

Mattel is thoroughly investigating the situation.
