A woman passenger severely injured during an Orange County street race in September when the car she was riding in crashed filed a lawsuit Thursday in Orange County Superior Court according to the Orange County Register. According to the Register, the young drivers of the two racing vehicles, 18 and 20 years old, engaged in an impromptu street race that left one driver dead and the other arrested on suspicion of manslaughter.

According to another article in today's Orange County Register:
SANTA ANA - A driver who may have been racing when his Honda Civic went off the northbound Santa Ana (I-5) Freeway at about 100 mph was hospitalized today with serious injuries, a California Highway Patrol officer said.

The car went off the road near Chapman Avenue, crashed through some trees, overturned and came to rest in a Motel 6 parking lot on top of a Chevrolet Suburban about 2:15 a.m., according to CHP Sgt. Paul Pines.

It is not uncommon for street racing to turn deadly. According to the National Hotrod Association's website, 49 people are injured for every 1,000 who participate in illegal street racing and in San Diego, where the street racing problem has been termed "epidemic," 16 deaths and 31 injuries were directly related to illegal street racing in 2001.
