CHP Offier Killed in Car Accident

A California Highway Patrol Officer (CHP) was killed ina tragic car accident, Sunday, when his patrol car veered off the side of the road and crashed.

The single vehicle crash happened at approximately 9 a.m. on Interstate 8, according to CHP officials.

The officer, of Winterhaven's CHP Office, was traveling eastbound in the right lane when his tired blew out on the left side of his car.

The officer was on duty at the time of the deadly crash. At this time officals are unsure how fast he was traveling or if he was involved on a call, but it is believed he may have been pursuing a speeding car.

Witnesses saw his patrol car tumble and crash through a roadside fence. The car rolled before coming to rest on it's right side.

"The car is almost unrecognizable," officials said. "Initial reports was they weren't sure if it was a Highway Patrol car or a Border Patrol car ... It was damaged from the multiple impacts of the rollover."

The officer suffered severe injuries in the crash but was alive and conscious at the scene, officials said. He was taken to Yuma Regional Medical Center by a Sun Care air ambulance. He was pronounced dead at YRMC.
