Alcohol Involved Fatal Head-On Freeway Collision

A pickup, headed the wrong way on Highway 99 near Atwater, collided head-on into another vehicle before it was hit by a third vehicle. The driver of the pickup, Octavio Garcia Sereno, 34, of Atwater, died in the Saturday night automobile accident. The investigating officers said that Sereno was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision.
Only moments before the fatal collision California Highway Patrol officers were responding to a reports of a wrong-way driver. All this according to a story in the Merced Sun-Star.
The pickup truck driven by Sereno headed southbound, collided head-on with a northbound car driven by Esperanza De Becerra, 46, of Atwater in the northbound lanes of Highway 99 at Central Avenue. Sereno's truck was then hit by a third vehicle driven by Gamaliel Galindo Jr., 30, of Merced.
De Becerra suffered major injures and was airlifted to a Modesto hospital. Yesenia Arana, 14, of Atwater, a passenger in De Becarra's car, was taken to a Modesto hospital as well, having suffered major injuries. Both were wearing seat belts. Galindo was not injured.
